One version of the origin of the whippet traces it to the miners of a mine in Northumberland, who enthusiastically followed dog racing. They were fascinated by greyhounds, which were unaffordable for the common people. So they started breeding a new breed and crossed greyhounds and terriers. They excelled at hunting rabbits and rats, and soon special competitions were organized for the ancestors of whippets.
The word "whippet" emerged at the end of the 19th century from the expression "whip it", which means "dalli, dalli". A request that is actually tailor-made for this greyhound, capable of the wildest races, because despite its small stature, it has both the aesthetic qualities and the sporting abilities of a large greyhound.
He has his own personality and a very gentle and loving nature. His personality and character are a colorful mix of contradictions and secrets. He appears extremely cat-like and not as “conceited” as other greyhounds. Its elegance often seems fragile, but it is much more robust and resilient than its external appearance suggests. He is a dog that combines the stark opposites of a greyhound and a terrier: at the dog track he trembles all over with impatience or does extraordinary sprints during a walk. At home, all his happiness lies in making himself comfortable on a pillow and not moving an inch. If there are other small animals in the household, he can instantly transform from a harmless family member into a merciless hunter and the days of a cat, guinea pig, hamster or bird are numbered.
