The Ruhr area gets its name from the river “Ruhr”, which then flows to the Rhine in the south of the region. Together with the industrial centers on the Lower Rhine and the Wupper, it forms one of the largest industrial conurbations in Europe as the Rhine-Westphalian industrial area (Rhine-Ruhr) and is located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
