Ouranopoli is a tranquil little town with around 1000 inhabitants on the Athos peninsula in Chalkidiki (Greece). The peninsula with the holy Mount Athos is an independent monastic republic. Entry is not permitted for women. Ships leave from Ouranopoli to the monastic republic every day. These are also only open to men. Cruises lasting several hours along the coast to Mount Athos, in which women can also take part, must not be less than 500 m from the monastic republic.
Female animals, with the exception of cats, are also not tolerated in the monastic republic. Only the monks who are artistically involved in painting icons are allowed to keep a few chickens, as the egg yolk is needed for the production of paint.
