The well-preserved ruined city of Machu Picchu was built in terraces by the Incas in the 15th century at an altitude of 2,360 meters on a mountain ridge in the Andes of Peru. The city contained 216 stone buildings connected by a system of stairs. Researchers now assume that the city was able to accommodate and support up to 1,000 people in its heyday. Machu Picchu is one of the largest tourist attractions in South America and is visited by an average of 2,000 people every day. UNESCO, which added the Machu Picchu attraction to the world cultural heritage list in 1983, is calling for a significant reduction in visitors in order not to endanger the cultural heritage. For this calendar, the photo artist Peter Roder has compiled and designed twelve beautiful photos of this ancient Inca city, an impressive companion for the whole year.
