Entering a Jewish cemetery is an impressive experience, completely surprising for anyone who dares to take this step for the first time. A place full of contemplation, undoubtedly spiritual even for non-Jews. Fragments of order within natural disorder, this is probably the most intense impression you get at first glance, purely emotionally. And for the fan of photography, who always strives to capture moments, moods, aesthetic elements for themselves and others in their own personal way, an almost inexhaustible hoard of motifs. Not voyeuristic, no - deeply impressed, full of respect and admiration for a burial site that is so incredibly different from those of our Central European Christian culture. A place full of mysticism, mysterious, rich in breath-taking symbols and moods, formulas, fables and animating structures full of magic, but also dignity in its highest form.

Jewish graves remain untouched, are allowed to fall into disrepair and are never cleared. According to Jewish belief, the grave belongs to whoever rests in it until the end of days, until the day the Messiah comes. Both decay and transience, as well as excessive nature, are present here in such a way that this is an obvious theme. Trees are allowed to grow up next to the old gravestones, pushing them aside, overgrowing them and enclosing them. The idea is that one day this process will be reversed and that once the tree is broken, it will have to release the stone again when it decays. Lichens, mosses, fungi and, in our case, the weathering sandstone make the stones shine in the most breathtaking colors in the sunlight, in the undergrowth and in the uncontrolled growing bushes. And yet the orientation of the grave steles shows order within the untamed nature and gives the site structure. The tombstones are often of moving beauty, even the simply shaped ones have an impressive face and an incomprehensible aesthetic thanks to the patina of the centuries, ornaments, symbols, their growth and decay and especially the Hebrew characters. And in the place that stands like no other for transience, the end, death, it is precisely there that life has a vitality that surpasses everything. A place where you can dare to think, fully aware of your fears, to discover the positive, the new, the change and, if you like, rebirth in death.
