A motif from the calendar "Galgo Español 2017" by 4pfoten-design - Andrea Redecker: The Galgo Español, which is not yet well known to us, is one of the sighthound breeds. In Spain it is used for hunting and greyhound racing. The Galgo Español is a very intelligent, calm, affectionate dog and loyal to his family. He rarely barks and behaves unobtrusively in the apartment. Dealing with children is usually problem-free and the Galgo is also extremely friendly and social towards other animals. Aggression is a foreign word for him. If he gets enough exercise, he doesn't have to live out his greyhound heritage on the racetrack. He can be trained well, but not with pressure and punishment. The Galgo is far too sensitive for that. He responds to praise and affection! If he is handled too hard by his owner, his caution often turns into fear. He is rather reserved and cautious towards strangers, but also without any aggression. When the dogs no longer meet the demands of their Spanish owners, they are often killed in the most cruel way or, at best, abandoned or given to Spanish animal shelters. But the situation in Spanish animal shelters is catastrophic, especially after the hunting season. When we talk about a full animal shelter in Germany, we are talking about 60 to 120 dogs - in Spanish animal shelters and perreras (killing stations) there are up to 650, more than 2/3 of them galgos. Many dogs are rehomed in Spain - small, cute and fluffy - but there is no future for the Galgos in Spain and certainly not one with a family connection. They are the waste product of Spanish hunters that no one wants. And so you're still running for your life in Spain today...
