Since 1944, the trolleybus has been as much a part of Esslingen as the Neckar or the castle. The company emerged from the Esslingen municipal tram, which ran from 1912 to 1944. An expansion of electrical operations was carried out in 1990 with the electrification of the route to the southern district of Zollberg. From this point on, two trolleybus lines and two duo-bus lines ran in Esslingen. The last duo buses were taken out of service in 2008. Since May 2016 - with the exception of long-term construction work - line 113 to Berkheim has been operated electrically using battery trolleybuses and using the contact line network of the former duo bus lines and line 118. With the procurement of additional battery trolleybuses, the intention is to operate 100% of Esslingen's public transport (city line bundle) purely electrically by 2025.
