We often simply call the common beech beech. By the way, the “red” part of the name does not refer to the color of the leaves, but to the reddish color of the wood. The common beech is so far the only tree species that has been chosen “Tree of the Year” twice: in 1990 and 2022. And there is a good reason for this: the “Mother of the Forest” – as the beech is also called – is the the most widespread deciduous tree in Germany.
Tatjana Balzer photographed a free-standing beech tree in Cologne over the course of around four years. This is how a documentary was created that shows the beautiful tree in good and bad times. This successful calendar was republished this year with the same images and an updated calendar.
