The Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis, occur when the solar wind - charged particles that come from the sun - hit the outer layers of the Earth's atmosphere and cause them to glow. The process is physically comparable to the principle of a fluorescent tube, except that this “fluorescent tube” extends over hundreds of kilometers, is in constant motion and shines in different colors because different gases, especially nitrogen and oxygen, are involved in the production of light . The predominant color is green, which comes from the excitation of oxygen. The Earth's magnetic field directs the solar wind to the Earth's magnetic poles, which is why the Northern Lights are usually only observed at high latitudes.
