Old German herding dogs are herding dog breeds from Germany that are threatened with extinction. These dogs were kept almost exclusively by itinerant shepherds. Their appearance is very different because the focus was on their usability and performance. Over the centuries, different regional varieties were formed through selection of shepherds, which was primarily based on suitability for use with regard to the type of livestock to be herded. Since transhumance sheep farming has virtually ceased to exist, these herding flocks are threatened with extinction.
