Our native tree foxes come in red, brown and black. They all have white bellies. Many people think that the black squirrels are the "immigrants" who drive away our red ones. But that's not the case!! You can easily tell the difference. All of our squirrels have ear brushes in winter. The counterpart to the European squirrel is the North American gray squirrel. On the one hand, you can tell that they are larger than our locals, and they never have ear brushes. Not even in winter. The photos in my calendar were all taken outdoors.
