Zakynthos, the southernmost of the Ionian Islands, has been praised by travelers and poets in the past for its lush vegetation and scenic beauty. The island was under Venetian influence for centuries and was then called Zante and also praised as the "Flower of the East". Contrasting landscapes are what makes the island so attractive. The fertile flatlands and hills in the east contrast with the barren mountains in the north and west. The cliffs to the west offer spectacular views. White limestone walls drop abruptly into the sea. There are many surf caves and the water shimmers a brilliant turquoise. The highlight is the Shipwreck Bay, the postcard motif par excellence, where a cargo ship ran aground in 1980. In addition, the beaches of Laganas Bay are the main breeding ground for loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean.
