A motif from the calendar "Im Bockstaschenland" by Hans Will: Wine, one of humanity's oldest drinks, is associated with Main Franconia at first glance. With around 6,000 hectares of vineyards, one of the smallest wine-growing regions in Europe, Franconia has a twelve-hundred-year-old wine-growing tradition that began with donations from Charlemagne in the Hammelburg area. When it comes to grape varieties, Müller-Thurgau now takes first place, followed by the traditional Silvaner and Bacchus. Almost half of the wines made are bottled in Bockstaschen, the traditional bulbous wine bottle. The bottle shape is ancient and goes back to the earlier canteens. The Bockstaschen of today have been around since the early 18th century. In 1726, only the highest quality and best wine from Würzburger Stein was initially allowed to be bottled in the Bockstaschen. Later, all other Franconian wines were also allowed to be offered in the Bockstaschen. In December 2015, the winegrowers' association presented a new, updated version of the Bockstaschen, which is slightly more angular than the old version. This calendar shows images, photographed by the renowned landscape photographer Hans Will, of the landscapes and cities where the Bockstaschen are at home.
