Marburg attracted the first travelers as early as the 13th century. They made a pilgrimage to the church of Saint Elisabeth, who died here in 1231, the first Gothic hall church on German soil. Like the Landgrave's Castle towering high above the half-timbered houses of the upper town, it forms the silhouette of Marburg. The picturesque Witch's Tower, which was built in the 15th century as part of the fortifications and served as a prison for a long time, offers a wonderful view of the Elisabeth Church and the Lahn Valley. According to a legend, it owes its name to the women who were once imprisoned here and accused of witchcraft.
