A motif from the calendar Marktbreit - Pearl on the southern Main triangle / Hans Will: The Marktbreit Roman camp was discovered during a flight in 1985 by the aerial archaeologist Otto Braasch. Marktbreit was first mentioned as broite inferior, that is, Unter- or Niedernbreit, in a document from the Count of Castell in 1266. In the early Middle Ages, Marktbreit was called Unternbreit or Niedernbreit and thus differed from the neighboring Obernbreit. The name Marktbreit was first mentioned in 1594. In 1557, Emperor Ferdinand I granted market rights. The name change to Marktbreit probably goes back to this. The town at the southernmost tip of the Main Triangle experienced its first heyday under the local rule of Georg Ludwig von Seinsheim. Under the rule of the Schwarzenberg family, which had been related to the Seinsheimers since 1643, the place developed into one of the most important main trading centers on the Main at the beginning of the 18th century, which was underlined by the construction of a harbor crane. In 1806 the place became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria. In 1819 the Bavarian government granted town charter. The calendar still shows many of the old buildings, all of which are in very good condition. Marktbreit is also known for its art festival “Artbreit”, which always attracts many thousands of visitors.
