A motif from the calendar "Lost Places - Prypjat - The Radioactive Ghost Town" by Bettina Hackstein: The city of Prypjat - Ukrainian Прип'ять is located in the upper Kiev region, in the north of Ukraine. It was built for around 50,000 people in connection with the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The city was a flagship because it became one of the most prestigious cities in Ukraine. Pripyat has been awarded the Soviet Union's Architecture and Planning Prize several times. It's no wonder, then, that the population increased so rapidly and jobs were in great demand. Wide streets, high-rise buildings and cultural events tailored to the population were a special feature. One can only imagine how cruel it is to be torn from one's home from one second to the next. On April 26, 1986, the nuclear power plant exploded and lethal, radioactive radiation escaped. The city of Pripyat was completely evacuated. People became homeless, both locally and mentally, and were never allowed to return to their lives. School, radar station, ghost station, the Palace of Culture, hotels, café, the unfinished construction of the cooling tower, the amusement park, the hospital, the kindergarten, the swimming pool, the boxing ring, the encased reactor number 4 in its sarcophagus where the explosion took place, the cinema and theater have been captured very compassionately and stirringly by the photographer, Bettina Hackstein, in her Lost Place series of Pripyat and Chernobyl. The photographer shows images of a moving contemporary testimony from the exclusion zone. A historic moment when all of Europe, if not the entire world, held its breath. Warning memories that will hopefully never be forgotten so that such a sad catastrophe never happens again.
