The Silk Road does not exist. Rather, this ancient trade route is a network of roads and paths that once connected China with the West. One of the most spectacular sections of the Silk Road runs through what is now Uzbekistan: for almost 2,000 years, the oasis cities of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand were important stopping points, trading and resting places for caravans on their arduous journey through the Kyzylkum Desert. Much of the centuries-old splendor of Genghis Khan's former empire has been preserved to this day. With their palaces, mosques, minarets, madrassas (Koranic schools), domed buildings, bazaars, old city walls and magnificent buildings, the oasis cities could still serve as the perfect backdrop for a “fairy tale from 1001 Nights”.
