Francis left behind a whole series of his own works, from which the famous Canticle of the Sun stands out. (monthly calendar, 14 pages)

Francis of Assisi (born Giovanni Battista Bernardone 1181/1182 in Assisi in the Italian province of Umbria; died on October 3, 1226 in the Portiuncula Chapel below the city) is considered to be the renovator of the church by returning it to its origins, namely a life according to the Gospel. From the community of like-minded people who gathered around him, the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) emerged - without Francis having intended it that way.
Francis left behind a whole series of his own works, from which the famous Canticle of the Sun stands out. The first verses of this song were probably written in the last two years of his life. According to some sources, the verse about peace refers to a dispute in Assisi. He wrote the verse about his sister Death on his dying bed. He wrote the prayer, as well as most of his other works, in the ancient Italian language; it was only later translated into Latin. However, it is one of the few works by Francis of which the old Italian version has been preserved. Poetry in everyday language was still highly unusual in Italian culture at this time. The Canticle of the Sun is therefore also seen as the beginning of Italian-language literature.
Superficially, the prayer to be sung seems to be a praise of creation, but in fact it praises the Creator and bows deeply to him, as becomes clear from the last two lines. Creation is not worshiped, but rather serves as a reason for praise and thanksgiving to God.
The translation used retains the old Italian grammar, according to which it is called Brother Sun, Sister Moon and Sister Death.
The images were carefully selected so that they reflect or symbolize the essential content of the verse. The columbine with its hanging flowers represents humility.
