A motif from the calendar "West of Midpoint" by Ellen and Udo Klinkel: John Steinbeck gave it the name "Mother Road" in his novel "The Grapes of Wrath". The legendary Highway 66 connected Chicago with Los Angeles and was probably the most famous and important highway in the United States until the construction of the Interstates that ran almost parallel to the 66. Countless people used it from the 1920s to the 1970s, whether to seek their fortune in the “Golden West”, to escape the forces of nature in the form of long-term sandstorms in Oklahoma, or as a sun-hungry tourist on the way to California. The legendary “street cruisers” from Detroit shaped the image of the “Mother Road” in the 50s and 60s, the neon signs of motels, cinemas and diners illuminated the night in places like Tucumcari, Santa Rosa, Grants, Holbrook, Williams, Albuquerque and Seligman . Today, only a few of them can be seen along “Historic Route 66,” as the road is now called. Only a few hundred miles of the original 66 still exist, motels are closed or completely dilapidated, as are countless gas stations, whose disused gas pumps still rust away as silent witnesses to the past. But the 66 is not dead - the old-fashioned motels, cinemas and diners still exist. Few, but their owners try to preserve or revive the legend and thus continue the history of Route 66. We have put together some of the most beautiful motifs in this calendar. “West of Midpoint” takes you to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California, perhaps the most beautiful section of “Old Route 66”, which today stands for freedom and adventure and sentimental nostalgia - a dream road for bikers and car tourists. Get your kicks...
