A motif from the calendar Squirrel / SchnelleWelten: The squirrel, regionally also called squirrel, squirrel cat or Low German catteker, is a rodent from the squirrel family. The squirrel's body structure is adapted to an arboreal and climbing lifestyle. Squirrels are sole walkers. They have four long, very mobile fingers with long curved claws on their front paws; the vestigial thumbs also have claws. The hind legs are disproportionately long and very strong. The long, curved claws provide the squirrels with good grip even when climbing upside down quickly on smooth trunks. The squirrel has wonderful red-brown to black-brown thick fur. The ventral side is always light colored. In spring and autumn, the squirrel undergoes a coat change in order to better adapt to the respective climate. Hands and feet are hairy in winter; In summer, however, hairless from below. The summer fur is brighter and more red in color than the winter fur. Their strong teeth grow throughout their life and are used to scrape off hard food. Squirrels feed on hazelnuts, beechnuts, spruce cones, fruit and fresh shoots. Small animals, young birds, bird eggs and mushrooms are also eaten. So they are not picky and are almost real omnivores. The squirrel is active during the day and can be easily observed, especially in the morning hours and before dusk. They are very clean and groom themselves very often. They don't really hibernate. In winter they only take longer periods of sleep or rest. In between they always look for food and eat.
