Iconic church building in the middle of an active community

The Nathan Söderblom Church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Reinbek-West parish. Based on designs by the Hamburg architect Friedhelm Grundmann, construction of the church, community center, pastorate and a sexton's apartment began in 1966. In 1968 the community center was completed in its current form. The building, built in a traditional east-west direction, has practically no windows on the south side bordering the market. It is also windowless to the east and west. The church is characterized by clear geometric shapes that reveal the function of the individual components from the outside. The bell chamber protrudes from the tower to the north and west, which is connected to the nave via a bridge. To the south, the semicircular side gallery protrudes towards the market. The anteroom is significantly lower in front of the main nave in the west. A skylight lantern extends the building upwards. The staircase to the organ gallery can be clearly seen on the north side as a semicircular component. The baptismal chapel is built low in front of the cube to the north, to the side of the altar on the east side. The only large window faces north into a leafy courtyard surrounded by administrative rooms and the community hall. The church is the center of a lively community life with a wide range of charitable and cultural offerings.
