The city on the Lahn, which is over 800 years old, gained in importance with the relocation of the Imperial Chamber Court to Wetzlar from the 17th century. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe completed an internship here lasting several months in 1772. He turned his time in Wetzlar and his admiration for Charlotte Buff into his bestseller “The Sufferings of Young Werther”. The novel's settings have long been popular tourist magnets.
Wetzlar has also made a name for itself as a city of optics. The Leica camera manufactured here is more than a high-quality optical device - it has long been a cult.
