The Algarve and Alentejo regions of Portugal, with their rolling hills, olive groves, grain and wine fields and cork oaks, stretch from southwest Portugal all the way north up to the Tagus Valley. Just as fascinating as the landscape are the white villages and towns where life goes on at its own leisurely pace. The Alentejo coast is 165 km long in total and offers endlessly long, flat sandy beaches in the north, while lonely sandy bays and cliffs dominate further south. The Natural Park of Southeast Alentejo and the Costa Vicentina, with more than 100 km of coastline, is considered the best preserved protected area on the European continent.
