Lamu is the center of Swahili culture and a world heritage site. 350 km north of Mombasa in Kenya. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was ruled by the Portuguese. Then the archipelago had its golden age in the 18th century and belonged to the Sultan of Oman and later the Sultan of Zanzibar. Its wealth was based on the slave trade until it was banned in 1907. In 1888 a German post office was built. Since there are no motorized vehicles, all transportation is carried out with the help of donkeys, of which there are more than 3000.
