La Palma is not only one of the Canary Islands, it is also the most beautiful of the Canary Islands and the most fertile in the entire archipelago, as well as being unique in many ways. According to UNESCO, La Palma is one of the three most beautiful islands in the world, along with Bora Bora and Jamaica.
La Palma is characterized by mountains, deep gorges, jungle-like flora in which deciduous and coniferous trees are mixed with tropical palms, wild fruit trees, ferns, cacti and laurel trees. The rare dragon tree also still occurs on La Palma.
Due to its volcanic formation, La Palma offers a unique nature and landscape. Due to its year-round vegetation, the island of La Palma is also known as Isla verde (“the green island”).
It owes this green lushness to the trade winds that form thick fields of fog on the mountains. The moisture from these clouds and weather conditions allow pine trees, laurel forests and rainforests to sprout. Around 170 endemic plant species grow here alone. This is also good for agriculture. Thanks to unique irrigation systems with water pipes or tunnels that were carved into the lava mountains for miles, it is possible to channel water from the mountains into the agriculturally used valleys. Banana cultivation and the best wines, especially Malvasia, can thrive alongside citrus fruits or vegetables. This also shapes the landscape. An interplay of green vegetation, black lava fields and azure Atlantic. A beauty that will captivate you too.
