There are around 1,100 cellar alleys in Lower Austria, most of them in the Weinviertel. While the cellars were used as wine production and storage facilities from the 17th century onwards, today they primarily serve as popular meeting places for socializing.
For example, the house wines are served at the “Heuriger” and regional delicacies are served. This means that the cellars have lost their former importance, but the tradition of the Köllamauna - the cellar men - who met for the Köllastund, the cellar hour and exchanged ideas about wine, politics and business, has continued with the rediscovered use as a social meeting place for various festivals and events Occasions that endure over time, making the continued existence of this extraordinary cultural asset possible.
