Professional photos provide an insight into the historic architecture of Idar-Oberstein, the city of gemstones and jewelry (monthly calendar, 14 pages)

Idar-Oberstein, located on the southern edge of the Hunsrück on the Nahe, is a gemstone and garrison town, the most populous municipality in the district and a middle center.
It is named after the Lords of Stein (Oberstein), first mentioned in 1075.
They were based at Bosselstein Castle (“Old Castle”), above the rock church that was later built.
Bosselstein Castle, Oberstein Castle and the rock church from 1482 are characteristic of the district and, as a striking ensemble, form the landmark of the city of Idar-Oberstein.

Because of the natural deposits of semi-precious stones (agate, jasper, etc.), the towns of Idar and Oberstein developed into one of the four most important jewelry centers in Germany from the middle of the 19th century. Many goldsmiths therefore settled on the banks of the Nahe in Oberstein. Agate grinders, on the other hand, use the Idarbach because of the better water conditions for operating the grinding stones.

In the course of the Rhineland occupation after the First World War, Oberstein became a French garrison. Several barracks were built (Klotzbergkaserne, Strasbourg barracks and Hohlkaserne)

The Nahe, which winds through the middle of Oberstein, was built over with a four-lane road, Bundesstraße 41, in the 1980s, so that the river now flows in a two-kilometer-long concrete canal. This completely changed the appearance of the city.
This calendar attempts - with professional photos - to provide an insight into the diverse, historic architecture of this city, which continues to maintain its importance as a center for gemstone processing and jewelry production - as well as global trade in them.
