Tallinn is the capital of Estonia and belongs to the Baltic States. Over the centuries, this area has been ruled by a variety of rulers. Danes, the Teutonic Order, Sweden and Russia ruled here under Peter I. After a brief independence from 1918 to 1940, Estonia became part of the Soviet Union. On August 20, 1991, Tallinn became the capital of an independent Estonia.
All of these influences can be experienced today in the picturesque old town. It is not for nothing that the Old Town of Tallinn was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 as an “example of an exceptionally well and completely preserved northern European medieval trading town on the coast of the Baltic Sea”.
