Asteroidea is the scientific name and they are small stars too. It's hard to imagine that they have been populating the world's oceans for more than 530 million years. Fossil finds testify to this. Around 1,600 specimens are known, although not all of them have a star-shaped appearance. Although starfish have no brains, hearts, or eyes, they have light-sensing cells on the tips of their arms and can see light and dark, detect water temperature, and respond to touch. With their excellent sense of smell, they primarily prey on slow-moving and sessile sea creatures. When attacked or in danger, they can shed individual arms, which, in the wonder of nature, simply grow back again.
