The Isles of the West lie far off the Scottish coast. This is where Gaelic culture is best preserved. The Outer Hebrides lie off the Scottish coast and are over 280 km long. The ferry takes you from Ullapool to the capital of Lewis in Stornoway, around 90 km across the sea. The islands are beautiful, pristine and wild.
The Outer Hebrides consist of over 100 small islands. The largest are Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra.
The east coast mostly slopes steeply, creating impressive cliffs. But the west coast is so flat that wonderful sandy beaches can be formed there.
The inland area of Lewis is dotted with many freshwater lakes, lochs and lochans (small lochs), which are surrounded by peatland. None of this is suitable for agriculture.
