Bergkamen is a town with a very special history in North Rhine-Westphalia. The history of the area that is now the town of Bergkamen goes back to the ancient Romans. In late summer 11 B.C. In the 4th century BC, a Roman camp was built on the so-called "castle hill" in Bergkamen Oberaden, under the command of the general Drusus. The memories of the Romans and the times as the largest mining town in Europe still shape the town of Bergkamen today.
