After completing his studies at the State Academy for Photo Design in Munich, Andy Ridder assisted in Stuttgart and Paris and then worked as a freelancer for leading magazines at home and abroad. He uses the black and white photos, some of which are two-tone and in contrasting tones, which were created as freelance works, as a counterpoint to his color commissioned photography. The location is rooms in which people and space are completely given over to the play of light and shadow, the atmosphere and the spontaneity of the moment. This can lead to unplanned productions in which Andy Ridder intervenes as little as possible in a controlling or manipulating manner, as in this series in a jazz club, published by “stern” and “max”. This reveals a rather subtle, hidden eroticism that is at most hinted at, but never imposes itself on the viewer superficially or even flatly. This eroticism tries to involve the viewer by gradually having to discover it for themselves. This gives him enough scope for his own interpretations.
