The Elbe Sandstone Mountains stretch on both sides of the Elbe between the Saxon city of Pirna and the Czech city of Tetschen-Bodenbach. There are around 1200 km of marked hiking trails in the German part of the mountains. The core zone of the mountains, also known as Saxon Switzerland, is the only rock national park in Germany. Hiking, climbing, cycling or taking a leisurely ride across the Elbe on one of the nine paddle steamers - everything is possible here, including across the border to the Czech Republic. Always a worthwhile holiday destination for me.
