Pirmasens, located on the edge of the Palatinate Forest, takes its name from the itinerant preacher Pirminius and was first mentioned in documents in 850. Landgrave Ludwig IX zu Hessen-Darmstadt, who had a preference for large grenadiers, developed the place into a garrison town, which then received city rights in 1763. After the death of the landgrave and the decline of the garrison, the population made a virtue of necessity and switched to shoe manufacturing, which is why the Pirmasensers are still called "Schlabbeflicker" today. This is not the only reason why people have experienced ups and downs in Pirmasens, because the city is built on seven hills.
