“The area is wonderful, wonderful!” wrote Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to Duke Karl August in Weimar on May 4, 1776. In 1831, Goethe celebrated his last birthday in the Hotel “Zum Löwen” in Ilmenau. He wrote "Wandrer's Night Song", perhaps the most beautiful poem in the German language, on the wooden wall of the hunting lodge on the Kickelhahn above the city in 1780. The spa business began here in 1830 and the Thuringian Technical Center was founded in 1894, which is the cornerstone for today's Technical University.
