“Caution, wildlife crossing for the next 80 kilometers” and “Stay in your vehicle” if you encounter bears,” signs inform me somewhere in the middle of nowhere on the side of a highway in lonely western Canada. Thanks for the tip, I think and wonder which of my panniers I should hide in if Master Petz actually shows up on the street again?

Signs should actually guide us in the right direction and draw our attention to dangers, special features and attractions. But who hasn't stood desperately searching in the impenetrable forest of signs at a big city intersection, cursed at the unmarked intersection of two dirt roads or been annoyed by grotesque prohibition and mandatory signs in regulation-obsessed cities.

In addition to the hundreds of thousands of signs that are not only proven to be superfluous in our well-organized Central European latitudes, but often achieve the opposite of what they are supposed to achieve, there are always a few that stand out from the perfectly styled forest of signs.
Who would seriously expect penguins, turtles or trolls crossing the road or the warning that airplanes occasionally use the road as a landing strip or the warning about road workers who are more reminiscent of Japanese sumo wrestlers? Many signs and traffic signs are detailed photos that tell a lot about the cultural and natural peculiarities of the countries you are traveling to. I have put together some of the most beautiful signs that I have seen on camera on more than 160,000 km of cycling trips. All signs are original and unchanged and have been combined with beautiful landscapes.
