The Basel Fasnacht is the largest carnival in Switzerland and is also known as “the drey scheenschte Dääg” (the three most beautiful days) (monthly calendar, 14 pages)

“wennsvieri schloot” begins the Basel carnival with the Morgenstraich on the Monday after Ash Wednesday at 4 a.m. A spectacle with tens of thousands of fools that lasts over 72 hours and ends on Thursday morning at 4 a.m. with the final straw. The cliques, as the participating groups are called, parade like fireflies with self-made masks (larvae) and colored “kopfladäärnli”. self-made head lanterns, in a never-ending stream through the city. They are accompanied by a host of masked people with piccolo pipes and drums. The always same sound of marching music echoes through the streets and alleys and quickly becomes a catchy tune. It is no coincidence that the Basel carnival is called “the three scheenschte Dääg” (the three most beautiful days). Karsten-Thilo Raab threw himself into the carnival hustle and bustle with his camera and captured some of the most beautiful scenes with his eyepiece.
