The Baltics consist of the states Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The three countries belong to the European Union and have the euro as legal tender. Riga was European Capital of Culture in 2014. Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has a picturesque old town. Because of the more than 50 churches spread across the city, Vilnius is also nicknamed the “Rome of the East”. UNESCO has added Vilnius Old Town, one of the best-preserved old towns in Europe, to the World Heritage List.
